Jekyll and Hyde
Author : LEONARD H. CADDY Directed By Colin Clyde The Playhouse, Walton-on-Thames. Week of 14th November 2010
This two act play is set in the late Victorian
age and is richly imbued with the rigid social, ethical, intellectual
and religious conventions of the time. Against
this backdrop Dr Henry Jekyll is intent to examine the workings
of the brain and the personality that lies
beneath the external semblance of character and social condition.
With disastrous results he seeks through his
experiments on himself to identify a person free from the cloak
of convention: in short a monster named Hyde
devoid of any moral principle.
The play has eight performers with Jekyll and
Hyde played by the same actor.
All the characters have strong roles for men and women of varying ages (equally distributed.) Character/description breakdown: JEKYLL: mild mannered, professionally inquisitive/ Hyde: his wild unpredictable alter ego with no sense of
good or evil.(playing age 35-45)
POOLE (the butler):Deferential to his "betters", vicious to those in his charge(at least to Charlotte.){playing age 45+} CHARLOTTE ( Parlor maid):young unworldly servant, timid and nervous to her social superiors, holds her own
with fellow servants.(Playing age late
teens/early 20's)
HILDA (Housekeeper):reliable experienced servant, mild mannered.(age indeterminate but older than Charlotte.) CELESTINE: betrothed to Jekyll. Plays her inbred social superior card to great advantage.(playing age late 20's-early 30's.) Dr LANYON (her uncle):an opinionated debater recognizing his social standing(playing age 50+) UTTERSON: an elderly lawyer. Practical and down to earth and appears a "drinker".(Playing age 60+) PENNY: Hyde's woman. Rough East Ender. Pretty stereotypical.(Playing age young to middle age.)
