May 2006 - Sir Michael Caine Drama Award

Congratulations to The Ember Players and their victory in the Leatherhead Drama Festival.  Their production “Failed Investments” directed by Anne Minter managed to beat off very stiff competition to win the coveted Sir Michael Caine Drama Award. The talented cast consisted of Kathryn Graham, Gillian Beaney, Nick Plaut, Cheryl St. George and Sue Wells, who was also nominated for her strong performance in the Best Actress category.

The team were very pleased to be performing in such a renowned festival. Director Anne Minter commented that it has been “great working with four really committed actresses…and of course the token male for his appearance at the end – well done Nick” in such a challenging play that combined both humour and sadness.  Thank you to the Festival organisers and also Andy Newbold for his fabulous photographs – www.andynewboldphotography.com

Anne Minter’s Comments on the award

“We were all shell-shocked when the winner was announced as we were in the middle of congratulating Sue Wells for being nominated for Best Actress!  It’s been great working with four really committed actresses in a play that has four good roles for women. In the short time of the play each of them changes their perspective on their own lives.  The play combines humour and some sadness.  It’s been a challenge making a static play into something that is good to watch on stage whilst resisting the temptation to get people moving for no apparent reason or to make them into Music Hall drunks.  I'd also like to credit the token man for his appearance - its not easy for anyone to come into a play so close to the end and make the appropriate impact.  Well done Kathryn, Sue, Gillian, Cheryl and Nick".
